Adolescence is referred to as the most delicate period during the development period of a child, as all the psychological and physical changes occur during this phase of growth. It is said to be the transitional period in an individual's life. In this session we will have a talk on physical and hormonal changes like negative attitudes, pressures from peers, drug and alcohol abuse, depression in adolescence, puberty changes, issues of sexuality, impact of substance abuse on child, bullying and aggression, impact of culture on adolescent learning, self-harm and suicidal behaviour, social life of adolescent, adolescent psychosis, adolescent parental relationship.
According to NIH mental disorders in USA over 20% (or 1 in 5) children, either suffering or have had a mental disorder at any point of their life. Nearly 4 million children and adolescents in USA having a serious mental disorder has suffered from significant functional impairments at home, at school and with peers. Biological, psychological and emotional changes observed in human beings during birth and till the end of adolescence encourages the development and advancement of clinical child and adolescent psychology through integration of its scientific and professional aspects.
Child psychiatry is a sub-branch under the broad field of Psychiatry which is dedicated for children only. This branch mainly focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders in children, adolescents, and their families. It involves the researches of the psychological and social factors that influence the development and course of these psychiatric disorders and treatment responses to various interventions. Child psychiatry also treats problems of hyperactivity, significant attention disorders etc. There can also be more serious disorders, such as schizophrenia, which can manifest very early in life. Therapists identify the problem a child is facing by speaking and listening to them and thereby can find a way to help them improve. Experts also prescribe medicines for treatment depending on the case.

Track 6: Child and Adolescent Counselling Psychology
Children and Adolescent counselling is a process of security for the young one to express and explore himself and hence learn to live a beautiful life. The counsellor mainly focusses on the young individual and their family or caretakers to help them adjust and thrive the challenges they face by themselves, learn new skills to adapt and thereby grow better as an individual. The mental health of children, however, is sometimes overlooked. Child counselling, or youth counselling is a type of counselling that focuses on children that are diagnosed with mental disorders that includes depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and grief. The disorders are differently pursued in children than in adults. Children may behave differently by becoming quiet during depression or mental suffering than adults who normally exhibit an irritated and out bursting nature.

Recent advances in Clinical Psychology include overviewing the "disorders" as "spectrum" problems. Psychopharmacology has made strides in treating symptoms but my favourite concept, requires some good-old "talk therapy. “This method “talk therapy” made a major advancement in the field of clinical psychology, finding the "best" dosage for suitable symptoms can be a tedious and very effective process for the subject. Market Research
According to WHO worldwide 10-20% of children and adolescents experience mental disorders. The average age for initiation of maximum psychiatric disorders is between14 to 20 year. Children with mental disorders face major challenges like stigma, isolation and discrimination, as well as lack of access to health care and education facilities.
An adult do have the capability to identify, understand and seek help for a problem, whereas a child may be confused and upset by what they are feeling and hence they are more vulnerable towards developing a mental disorder. Recently with the help of many organisations who have devoted their work to spread awareness regarding this mental distress children have got some exposure towards these treatments. These organisations help young people to receive the support they need to progress into young adults.
It came to notice that the top concern for young people was family relationships, including conflict in the family and parents’ divorce or separation. Over 12 months, there were over 38,000 counselling sessions for this concern.
Some of the concerns that had affected children and young people included:
Main concerns Number of counselling sessions
Low self-esteem, feeling sad,low or lonely. 35,244
Abuse, including sexual, online, physical, emotional and neglect. 29,126
Bullying, face-to-face or online. 25,736
Self-harm 19,557
There is also concern about the occupancy levels at mental health inpatient facilities. During 2011-12 the Care Quality Commission found that 16% of wards visited by their officers were over capacity and half of the wards were nearly full with 90% occupancy. It has been observed that only 65% of the people with psychiatric disorders actually receive the treatment.
With the rising number mental health patients the financial strain on services has also expanded and now its estimated global cost is £1.6 trillion greater than cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and heart disease on their own
Mental health services in the UK are overstretched, but still investment in mental health prevention is limited. Currently mental health research is only receiving 5.5% of the total UK health research spending (equating to £115 million) for vulnerable people in UK society.
WHO has adopted a comprehensive mental health action plan 2013-2020 during the 66th World Health Assembly.
The four major objectives of the action plan includes:
· To build up effective leadership and governance for mental health.
· To make responsive mental health and social care services accessible in community-based settings.
· To implement strategies for promotion and prevention in mental health.
· To empower information systems, evidence and research regarding mental health.
Each of the four objectives is accompanied by one or two specific targets, which provide the basis for measurable collective action and achievement by Member States towards global goals.
