The history of science in Berlin is full of the names of famous scholars like Humboldt, Einstein, Virchow, Koch, Meitner and Planck. Major national research organizations such as Fraunhofer, the Helmholtz Association and the Leibniz Association are represented in Berlin by various institutions and research sites. Germany’s largest concentration of universities and colleges is located in Berlin, a leading center of science, academics, and research, not least thanks to its 39 institutions of higher education. Germany’s national research organizations are represented in Berlin with a number of institutes, as are eight federal ministry research facilities. Together with Berlin’s universities, nearly 100 research institutions in the city form an important basis for the region’s economic development.
